Background of the Study
The rapid proliferation of Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices has revolutionized how organizations, including educational institutions, manage their infrastructure. IoT devices, ranging from smart classroom tools to security cameras, provide convenience and improved functionality within university networks. However, the integration of IoT devices also introduces significant security risks. These devices often lack robust security features, making them vulnerable to cyber-attacks and unauthorized access. For Federal University, Gusau, the increasing reliance on IoT for academic, administrative, and campus security functions necessitates a thorough understanding of the impact of these devices on network security. The university’s existing security measures may not be sufficient to address the vulnerabilities introduced by IoT, and without appropriate safeguards, these devices could potentially become entry points for cybercriminals. This study aims to explore the security challenges posed by IoT devices and develop strategies for mitigating these risks within the university's network.

Statement of the Problem
Federal University, Gusau, has seen an increase in the use of IoT devices across its campus to enhance operational efficiency and improve user experiences. However, this growing dependence on IoT devices has raised concerns about network security. Many IoT devices are inherently insecure and can be exploited to compromise the network infrastructure, leading to potential breaches of sensitive student and staff data, loss of control over connected devices, or disruption of network services. The lack of a comprehensive security framework to address the unique vulnerabilities posed by IoT devices presents a critical problem for the university. This study seeks to analyze the impact of IoT devices on the network security of Federal University, Gusau, and propose solutions to mitigate these risks.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the current usage and security risks associated with IoT devices at Federal University, Gusau.

  2. To analyze the impact of IoT devices on the overall network security at Federal University, Gusau.

  3. To recommend strategies for enhancing network security in the face of increasing IoT adoption.

Research Questions

  1. What are the primary security risks associated with IoT devices used at Federal University, Gusau?

  2. How do IoT devices affect the overall network security of Federal University, Gusau?

  3. What measures can be implemented to improve the security of IoT devices within the university’s network infrastructure?

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on the analysis of IoT devices within the campus network of Federal University, Gusau, Zamfara State. It will not extend to the security implications of IoT devices outside the university’s network or other sectors. Limitations of the study may include challenges in gathering detailed information on the devices used within the university and the potential unavailability of specific technical data due to privacy or security concerns.

Definitions of Terms
